Lorneville Abattoir UPDATE

After a very long process and quite a bit of red tape our abattoir has recently been MPI accredited

What this means:

  • All stock that goes through the abattoir will undergo Ante and Post Mortem Inspection by our qualified staff and can then be legally sold if you wish.

  • All stock must have an ASD form (Animal Status Declaration) - either filled out online or using the paper booklet provided. We’ve got an example form for reference if you’re not sure how this works.

  • Cattle must have NAIT (National Animal Identification Tracing) records completed

Why the change from Home kill abattoir to MPI registered abattoir?

  • We raise our own beef and lamb and to sell it in our retail stores it must be slaughtered by a registered abattoir. Now rather than outsourcing this we can slaughter our own stock and have full control from the field to the fridge.

  • We’ve had requests for years from independent farmers to small retail butchers who can’t get their stock through the big meat works.

Any changes for existing clients?

  • Short answer - no, not really.

  • Its business as usual except you’ll need an ASD form and we’ll inspect your stock. The butchery will do your processing to your requirements like always.

  • You don’t have to sell your stock to use our abattoir and processing service, our existing clients will be prioritised and well looked after.

New Abattoir Clients

  • Stock can be dropped off Sunday - Thursday. At this stage we don’t require bookings, but this may change.

  • Carcasses can be collected whole/quartered once chilled ready for further processing.

  • Secondary processing for retail sale will be on a case by case basis only. Please enquire if you are interested in having our butchery break down and pack your carcass ready for sale elsewhere as this is not our primary focus.

  • We do not offer retail fridge space sorry, The Grocer sells its own Southern Grown premium cuts.
